About the family

Hinoki is a revival and redesign of Schelter-Antiqua, a serif typeface issued by the Leipzig foundry Schelter & Giesecke in 1905. The original's low-contrast old-style structure is the aspect of type preserved in the design. Making Hinoki read well at text sizes was a central development concern. The original structure and charisma of Schelter-Antiqua as the starting point offered the opportunity to redraw it with a softer, more contemporary sensibility.

The defining design decisions are three: slanted terminals with curved brackets where the serifs meet the strokes, rounded serif edges that ease the transition between dark and light, and curves drawn to suggest calligraphic translation without high contrast. The result is a typeface that carries the warmth and rhythm of a humanist old-style while moving with a more open, approachable energy. It is comfortable in long text and distinctive at display sizes.

Hinoki Regular ships with 855 encoded codepoints (2,412 glyphs) across Western and Central European Latin, the Latin Extended Additional block for African and Americanist usage, a complete typographic symbols set, and a fullwidth / halfwidth supplement for CJK-context typographic use. The OpenType feature set spans 21 features, including small capitals, old-style and lining figures with proportional and tabular variants, fractions, superscript and subscript numerals, scientific inferiors, case-sensitive punctuation, discretionary ligatures, localised forms, and a stylistic set of alternate forms.

The typeface is built for editorial, book, and long-form text use, and performs equally well in branding and display contexts where a serif with quiet personality is needed.

About AJW Type

AJW Type is a type foundry based in Colorado, established in 2026 by Alexander J. Werdmuller von Elgg. The foundry's work focuses on revival type — drawing from printed specimens of the turn of the twentieth century and the mid-century period. Each family is developed with close attention to the drawing character of its source material: the expressive particularities of the original letterforms, their spacing relationships, and the structural logic that gives a specimen its visual personality. The production process at AJW Type is methodical. Research into historical specimens precedes drawing; vector work, sidebearings, and kerning are developed in sequence, with each stage examined before the next begins. Language support is a standing commitment across all families, extending the reach of each typeface beyond its historical origins and into contemporary multilingual use. The foundry's work spans the full pipeline — from the drawn letterform to the production font file.
