About the family

An absolutely geometric sans serif for headlines, logos, and advertising. Thanks to its precise character shapes and a wealth of ligatures, Avant Garde is ideal for creating logos and typographic compositions in the spirit of American graphic design from the 1970s.

The typeface was designed by Herbert Lubalin and Tom Carnase in 1970 for the International Typeface Corporation. It was originally based on a logotype the duo created in 1967 for Avant Garde magazine, drawing inspiration from the geometric sans serifs popular in the 1920s and ’30s. Oblique styles were later added in 1977 by André Gürtler, Christian Mengelt, and Erich Gschwind.

The Cyrillic versions of the four primary styles were developed at Paratype (then ParaGraph) by Vladimir Yefimov in 1993. Additional Cyrillic styles were designed in 2009 by Evgeny Nedelko, Isabella Chaeva, and Olga Umpeleva.

Cyrillic alternates and ligatures for select styles (Book, Book Oblique, Demi Bold, Demi Bold Oblique) were also introduced in 2009 by Vladimir Yefimov and Olga Umpeleva.
