About the family

JA Textura was created by calligrapher Jackson Alves to help beginners study and practice Gothic calligraphy and to make planning calligraphic compositions faster and easier. Based on the Textura Quadrata style, it brings the process of writing by hand into a digital typeface.

The family includes two complementary styles: Pen and Skeleton. Pen captures the characteristic shapes and contrast of lettering made with a broad-edge nib. Skeleton reveals the underlying paths of the strokes, providing a guide that can be printed and traced for practice or used to transfer a composition onto paper.

This approach grew out of Jackson’s own working process: arranging a composition digitally with the Pen style, then printing the Skeleton version as a guide for the final piece of calligraphy. It offers beginners a practical starting point and experienced calligraphers a useful way to plan their work.

Beyond calligraphy practice, JA Textura’s condensed proportions and strong vertical rhythm make it a distinctive choice for headlines, logotypes, packaging, posters, editorial titles, and album artwork. Alternate letterforms, swashes, and ligatures provide further options for shaping words and adding decorative touches.
