About the family

Inspired by the aesthetics of technical diagrams, Kulutu is a contemporary typeface family characterized by clean lines, rational proportions, and functional legibility. This typeface artfully combines controlled geometry with subtle humanist details, ensuring warmth and readability across various applications, including long technical texts, user interfaces, and wayfinding. Classified as a geometric sans-serif with humanist influences, Kulutu stands out for its neutral, professional, and technical tone. Its personality strikes a balance between measured simplicity and geometric precision, featuring softened openings and angles that prevent austerity. This design approach makes it particularly suitable for institutional and industrial contexts, where clarity is of utmost importance. In terms of anatomy, Kulutu boasts a medium-high x-height, enhancing legibility even at smaller sizes. The contrast is low to moderate, with slightly softened terminals, while certain letters, notably the “a” and “g,” adopt simplified forms to facilitate faster reading. The counters are intentionally open, allowing for clear differentiation of closely spaced glyphs (e, c, o) in dense text, while small angles on the diagonals evoke the precision of technical drawing lines. The family is structured for great flexibility, offering seven subfamilies ranging from Compressed to UltraWide, and thirteen weights from Thin to Extra Black. In total, the typeface encompasses 298 glyphs, focusing on simple Latin characters, making it ideal for technical and documentary uses where readability and visual consistency are crucial. OpenType features include contextual ligatures, small caps, discretionary ligatures, and fractions, all of which enhance technical typesetting and precision typography. Kerning and spacing have been meticulously refined according to two sets of optical and metric guidelines, optimized for both user interfaces (UI) and print, ensuring smooth readability across various mediums. In practice, Kulutu excels in technical manuals, industrial interfaces, signage, and scientific reports. To maintain optimal hierarchy and clarity, it is recommended to use light weights for captions, medium weights for body text, and bold weights for headings and numbering.
