About the family

Littleworth was designed by the prominent etcher Frederic L. Griggs in 1930 and released in hot metal by Monotype in 1932. Steve Matteson referenced Griggs’ original ink drawings in his revival and expansions of the typeface family. Griggs did not provide a drawing for an italic so Matteson drew a narrow chancery form to complete the family.

Griggs’ own handwriting was quite narrow and lively so this italic form seemed a suitable companion. Littleworth’s letterforms are quite architectural in design and proportion with delicate serifs and extreme calligraphic stress. The type is suitable for formal documents and extensive text. The rhythm is comfortable to read and visually crisp for fashion-centric branding and publishing.
