About Mute Devanagari Variable Font Family

We developed Mute Devanagari for designers that create User Interfaces (UI). It is the Devanagari version of our Mute superfamily. On the whole, the Mute superfamily supports several different scripts used in India, including the Arabic and Latin scripts. The Devanagari script doesn’t historically employ serifs at the end of stroke endings the way the Latin script does. However, the nature of Mute Devanagari’s strokes generates the same feeling in texts as humanist sans serif typefaces do for the Latin script. The Latin-script characters in Mute Devanagari are also humanist sans serifs. Our product is available in two formats: either install Mute Devanagari as a single Variable Font or as seven static OpenType font files. Those seven static files range in weight from Thin to Bold. While the static-format fonts offer a good intermediary-step selection, users who install the Variable Font have vastly greater control over their text’s stroke width. The Mute Devanagari Variable Font’s weight axis allows users to differentiate between almost 1,000 possible font weights. That enables you to fine-tune your text’s exact appearance on-screen or in print. In terms of appearance, the stroke terminals on Mute Devanagari’s letters all end horizontally or vertically. The typeface generally has low stroke contrast. That’s paired with the letters’ counter forms, which have been designed to be very large. Mute Devanagari’s large and clear counters are probably the typeface’s most prominent feature. They ensure that the font reads quite well when designers set it in small sizes. After all, there is often not a lot of vertical space available in User Interfaces. Mute Devanagari makes the most use of the available space. Also, it is a very legible typeface. Manushi Parikh designed Mute Devanagari.

ITF has designed and licensed fonts to some of the world’s most iconic brands including Apple, Google, Samsung, Sony, Amazon and Hyundai to name just a few. Its retail library offers fonts for text and display use, in visual styles ranging from traditional to experimental. ITF currently offers over 200 retail font families across 20 writing systems. ITF’s Kohinoor font family is on permanent display at London’s Design Museum as part of the “Designer Maker User” exhibition, which recognises this work as a historic milestone in the field of graphic design.
