About the family

Designed by German graphic designer and professor Friedrich Poppl, Laudatio was released by Berthold in 1982, the year of Poppl’s death. Laudatio is a distinctive sans serif with a large, rectangular x-height and strokes that show the influence of Poppl’s background in calligraphy. It has an open, contemporary feel and is appropriate for both text and display work.

About Berthold

The H. Berthold typefoundry, renowned for crafting high-quality typefaces, was founded in 1858 by Hermann Berthold in Berlin. By 1918 the foundry had become the largest in the world, with offices in Stuttgart, St. Petersburg, Leipzig, Riga, Budapest and Vienna. To complement its proprietary typesetting equipment business activities, Berthold developed high quality typefaces. The H. Berthold foundry’s most celebrated family of typefaces is arguably Akzidenz-Grotesk (released 1896), known as the mother of all sans serifs. The Premium foundry page can be viewed Here.
