About the family

Recorder reflects an era where design, technology, and mass production began to converge — a moment at the end of the 20th century shaped by industrial graphics, mass media, and early digital culture. Its starting point was the iconic Compact Disc logo, whose strict geometry and engineered clarity defined the core logic of the design. During development, this reference expanded through industrial display fonts such as Compacta and later mechanized designs like Neographik, connecting Recorder to the tradition of late-modernist typography. Recorder pushes geometric construction toward an almost mechanical extreme. Its letterforms are built around a deliberate contrast between inner capsule-shaped counters and outer rectangular forms with rounded corners. This interaction creates a distinct tension between softness and rigidity, precision and mass. The effect becomes especially pronounced in the italic styles, slanted at 15°, where inner shapes largely preserve their geometry, appearing rotated rather than skewed — reinforcing the non-calligraphic nature of the design. Despite its apparent strictness, Recorder avoids simplification. Non-obvious letter constructions, and deliberate differences between uppercase and lowercase forms add depth and character. Rounded transitions on sharp angles reference chamfered lettering found on industrial objects such as stamped metal or vehicle license plates, introducing a tactile quality beneath the geometric surface. The family consists of 4 subfamilies — Basic, Capsule, Outline, and Mixed. Basic forms the structural backbone with adjustable weight and bidirectional slant. Capsule features oversized capsule-shaped ink traps inspired by printed circuit boards and electronic components. Outline directly echoes the visual language of the Compact Disc logo. Mixed uses contextual alternates to pseudo-randomly blend Basic and Capsule forms, adding controlled variation.
