About the family

Stella Metropolitika is a special font by Stella Project. It is an upright —and not inclined— handwritten font, something quite rare among the archival material studied. At its core is the signage of a well-known pastry shop “Metropolitikon” in the center of Athens, a particularly expressive lettering, with a very calligraphic feel and connections between the characters. With few other similar examples of writing, the font was actually “invented” in an attempt to reconstruct all the characters based on this lettering. Another element that characterizes it is the connections between the characters, a fluid script which makes it look like continuous writing so that the pen is guided from one letter to the next without lifting from the paper. To achieve this, hundreds of alternative characters and ligatures had to be designed, from which the appropriate ones are automatically selected when typing.

About Fonts.GR

Fonts.GR, Greek Digital Type Library (originally Cannibal) was founded in 1995 with the aim to enrich and renew the Greek typography. The permanent members (Panos Haratzopoulos, Yannis Karlopoulos), their regular collaborators and many other graphic designers that they have cooperated at times, equally skilled in typography and with a significant contribution to graphic design and visual arts.During this time Fonts.GR has designed and published to the Greek and international market new font designs, original or Greek versions, which were accepted with enthusiasm since they covered the need for dynamic communication tools. Many of these fonts were coincided (in terms of communication) with major events (Olympic Games Athens 2004, Greek Presidency of the European Union) and supported the graphic communication of agencies, institutions, advertising companies, newspapers and other publications. Fonts.GR's “Stella Project” (2013-2018), a study in the forgotten art of calligraphy of the 50s, 60s and 70s, gained great publicity in Greece. It led to the production of original fonts widely used in Greek packaging and branding, an exhibition at the Benaki Museum, a documentary on ERT3 public television and a series of lectures and workshops in Greece and Cyprus.Fonts.GR has been providing consulting services related to the design of Greek characters to many Type Foundries and independent designers around the world.
