About the family

The ancient city of Ugarit, located in what is now northern Syria, is known for its ruins where cuneiform tablets dating from the 14th to 13th centuries BC were discovered. The latest stage of cuneiform writing found on these tablets is known as Ugaritic. A distinctive feature of this script is that, while being cuneiform, it represents one of the earliest examples of an alphabet, having evolved from the original Proto-Sinaitic script to the Phoenician-derived alphabet. Although Ugaritic is true cuneiform, we created a Latin script in a cuneiform style as a homage to the Ugarit kingdom, which transitioned from cuneiform shapes to an alphabet. Named "Ugarit Coin," the font honors the French word for "wedge" or "cuneiform," coined after the French archaeological expedition that unearthed it in 1929.
