About the family

Vergils Archive is a tall, slender font inspired by a writing style called Rustic Capitals, popular in Rome more than 1000 years ago. The font is named for the poet Virgil (Vergil), and specifically refers to the letter shapes found in illuminated manuscripts such as Vergilius Vaticanus and Vergilius Romanus. Rustic Capitals are elegant, slender, and characterized by a distinct, often rapid, pen-driven style. It was popular for copying literary works and for display manuscripts, written with a trimmed broad stylus that produced distinctive thick and thin strokes. Although traditional Rustic Capital writing was uppercase-only, Vergils Archive extends the aesthetic to cover upper case, lower case, small capitals, accents, and other special letters found in the Extended Latin character set. The italic styles feature a strong (15°) rightward slant, recreating the scribal handwriting style that was popular at the time. Vergils Archive invokes the classical era of history: it is a font for orators, scribes, and marble statues. Ligatures and stylistic alternates allow you to move seamlessly between a highly stylized classical look and a simplified look designed for legibility.
