About the family

VLNL Lolly

The idea for VLNL Lolly finds its origin way back in Donald DBXL Beekman’s early childhood comic strip lettering attempts (1960s-1970s). Lettering that was inspired by big, heavy headlines in Dutch comic magazines Eppo and Pep that he used to devour. Later in the process also old movie posters from 1920-1940 (Wizard of Oz), vintage art deco travel posters and circus posters found their way into the blend. There are several sketched incarnations to date, but It was properly designed by DBXL in 2023 to be used as the main font for LTTRS, a Dutch children’s theater play and accompanying book about analfabetism by theatre group Eigen Werk.

VLNL Lolly comes in three weights: Inline, Solid and Line. The Solid and Line fonts can be stacked on top of each other to create two-colour headlines. As a bonus, the Line weight can also be deployed solo as a somewhat quirky handwritten font. VLNL Lolly fonts contain a number of of ligatures to enhance your designs. The fonts have a jolly, cheerful and frivolous appearance, making it perfectly suitable for kid’s stuff and comedy shows, but also will do well in magazine headlines and music posters. Logo designs are also a viable option.

“Lollie” is the Dutch word for lollipop, the sweet and sticky sugar-candy-on-a-stick that all kids love.

It’s very sweet, just like the fonts.
