About the family

VLNL Soba is DBXL’s all-caps brush stroke handwriting font. In 2015 Donald Beekman received a brush marker pen as a present. While trying out the Faber Castell PITT, Rapper’s Delight by Sugar Hill Gang was playing in the studio and delivered a suitable text to write. DBXL was pleased with the result and put the text on a coffee mug. Not much later it was turned into a font and became part of the brand identity of Amsterdam hiphop dance company ISH. VLNL Soba contains three sets of characters, that are automatically alternated through Open Type (Contextual Alternates feature programmed by Erik van Blokland / Letterror). This makes VLNL Soba look really handwritten, with a very limited number of repeated characters. VLNL Soba has a distinct Asian flavor, but can be deployed in lots of designs. DBXL used it for hiphop and dance music posters and flyers. But Soba is also very suitable for ramen shops, hipster coffee bars, restaurant menus, logos, headlines, you name it.
