About the family

Data Error Horiz AOE Pro expands upon the original Data Error matrix system by introducing horizontal strokes that connect the pin-grid structure into continuous bands of light. Preserved in the Astigmatic Institute’s Digital Display Research division, this variation reflects experimental display technologies that bridged the gap between raw dot matrices and more readable electronic signage. The horizontal striping strengthens the rhythm of the characters while subtly improving legibility across the grid, producing a look reminiscent of early terminal displays, electronic instrumentation panels, and prototype computer interfaces. While the core structure still reflects the mechanical logic of pin-matrix printing, the added horizontal strokes give the typeface a distinctly futuristic tone. The result feels simultaneously retro and technological, evoking laboratory consoles, diagnostic screens, and early digital dashboards. Data Error Horiz AOE Pro complements the original Data Error family while offering a more continuous visual texture that works especially well in larger display settings. Designers working on sci-fi graphics, digital interface simulations, retro computing themes, and experimental tech branding will find this variation particularly expressive.

About Astigmatic

In 1873, the strange and fantastic story began. Nearly two centuries later, Brian J. Bonislawsky was born, and carrying on a mix of the the footsteps his ancestors before him took, he picked up the the traditions and founded the Astigmatic One Eye Foundry, which later expanded to become the Astigmatic One Eye Typographic Institute. (For more of the background story, see the Historical Perspective link below.) Since its founding Astigmatic has worked with dozens of designers, helping them forge their own foundries as well as helping to increase the quality of type created by Astigmatic and these other foundries. Astigmatic strives to continually increase its range of typographic scope; taking on expeditions to revive old typestyles, unearth long lost typefaces, forge new styles yet unseen, and begin to develop more comprehensive language typestyles of the WGL4 set size which includes Greek and Cyrillic extensions. If you are looking for a wide variety of typographic influence and style, the Astigmatic One Eye Institute is your source for type.
