About the family

The word “DOKKOI” is a rallying cry used to cheer during SUMO, Japan’s traditional form of wrestling.

A sumo wrestler’s open-hand strike is said to generate approximately 500 to 1,000 kilograms of force. To protect themselves from the impact and risk of injury, sumo wrestlers develop large, solid, and stable physiques.

The lettering on traditional sumo posters is painted with a brush using exceptionally thick strokes. By filling every available space with bold lettering, it expresses the hope that the venue will likewise be filled with spectators, leaving no empty seats.

DOKKOI is a bold, grounded typeface designed to embody ideas rooted in Japanese tradition, including stability, encouragement, prosperity in business, and strength.

About Thirdin

We are based in Japan and creating new fonts. We are surrounded by so many languages and so many letters. In Japan we believe each words have their own soul and power and we call this "KOTODAMA". In daily life, while we are speaking, writing or chatting, we do not think of the design, history, concept or the story of each characters, but they all have meaning in itself. As a creator Thridin's role is to tell people the story of fonts and to value words when we use.
