About the family

Inklea began with a practical family request: my cousin needed appliqué letters for handmade baby towels. A counterless alphabet would be easier to cut from fabric and stitch in place, so I designed every capital as a solid piece. I also restricted each character to a single corner, giving its outline an implied path like a continuous thread. Those two rules produced broad, rounded forms with sealed interiors and one deliberate interruption in the curve.

The original construction remains useful for appliqué names, felt nursery banners, quilt lettering and children’s backpack patches. It transfers just as naturally to cut paper, adhesive vinyl and foam lettering; there are no enclosed centres to cut separately, position or lose. What began as a sewing solution became a practical display alphabet for any process built around solid shapes.

Inklea includes three complementary styles. Solid supplies the complete silhouettes, while Shine can be layered over it as a separately colourable set of highlights. Slick incorporates those highlights as knockouts, preserving the glossy treatment when the lettering needs to remain one colour. The same word can move from a flat fabric cutout to a two-tone, wet-looking surface without changing its underlying shape.

That reflective quality opens a second territory in confectionery and frozen-dessert design. Inklea’s swollen forms can suggest gummy candy, jelly, icing, syrup or soft serve on candy pouches, ice-pop wrappers, dessert cartons and ice-cream shop specials. They can also read as gel, foam or moulded plastic on slime kits, bath products and glossy sticker sets. The recurring corner keeps these material associations from dissolving into generic bubble lettering.

There is a softer psychedelic and storybook quality in the alphabet as well. Its compact, counterless capitals suit children’s fantasy titles, magical-forest games, potion-themed sweets and other settings that benefit from lettering that feels friendly, tactile and slightly peculiar.

Inklea is an all-caps display family intended for names, flavours, titles and concise headlines. Because its letters rely on exterior silhouettes rather than conventional counters, they work best when given enough size to make those unusual shapes clear.
