About the family

I’ve always liked old typewriter lettering. The rough edges, the inked texture, the slightly worn look of words put down with an ink ribbon. Give me an old letter or a card from a filing cabinet and I’ll spend longer looking at the type than reading it.

Type Old Writer is my take on that vintage typewriter look. It has a distressed, textured finish that brings a bit of analogue roughness to the page. There’s a mechanical feel to the lettering, with enough grunge to make things look used.

Think archival documents, old correspondence and manuscripts with a date typed at the top. That’s the sort of material I had in mind. Put it on faded paper for a nostalgic, retro feel, or use it on a plain background where you can see the detail in the letters.

It works as a decorative element, too. A few typewritten words on a label or a book cover can suggest an old document without having to distress every inch of the design. Sometimes the lettering is enough.

It includes basic punctuation, symbols and marks, with full Latin character support for Western, Central and South Eastern European languages, plus those used in South America.

About It's me Simon

Hello, I’m Simon Stratford, an independent type designer based in London. After spending more than 20 years in the design industry—including time at London branding and film agencies—I left the rat race to work for myself. For nearly a decade, I’ve been creating characterful retail fonts and bespoke typefaces for branding, advertising, packaging and entertainment. My work has been used by Reebok, ITV, Three, King and creative teams around the world. I’m drawn to lettering with personality: bold, distinctive type that refuses to disappear politely into the background. When I’m not designing fonts, you’ll usually find me painting, taking photographs, hunting for trainers, walking dogs or searching for a proper cup of coffee.
