Über die Schriftfamilie Gotham

Jeder Designer hat schon einmal die schnörkellosen Buchstaben der amerikanischen Umgangssprache bewundert, diese Buchstaben aus Farbe, Gips, Neon, Glas und Stahl, die das Stadtbild so prägen. Aus diesen bescheidenen Anfängen entstand Gotham, eine hart arbeitende Schrift für die Ewigkeit.

Die Schrift Gotham wurde im Jahr 2000 von Jonathan Hoefler und Tobias Frere-Jones entworfen. Gotham ist eine serifenlose Schrift, die viele Attribute der "geometrischen" Gattung der Typografie aufweist. Sie wurde inspiriert von Stil mit fetten Großbuchstaben, die sich außerhalb der typografischen Tradition im frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhundert entwickelten und auf lithografierten Plakaten, Emailleschildern und Geschäftsfassaden in New York City zu finden waren. Gotham erschien erstmals 2001 auf den Seiten der Zeitschrift GQ und erlangte 2007 internationale Aufmerksamkeit, als sie von der Präsidentschaftskampagne von Barack Obama übernommen wurde. Die Gotham ist eine der beliebtesten und einflussreichsten Schriften unserer Zeit und befindet sich in der ständigen Sammlung des Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Vom Schreibtisch des Designers:

Gotham feiert die attraktiven und bescheidenen Schriftzüge der Stadt. In New York wimmelt es von solchen Buchstaben, handgefertigten serifenlosen Schriften, die eine gemeinsame Grundstruktur haben, die Idee eines Ingenieurs von einer "Grundschrift", die sowohl die Eigenschaften ihrer Materialien als auch die Eigenheiten ihrer Schöpfer überwindet. Es sind die aus Bronze gegossenen Zahlen, die Büroeingängen ihre Autorität verleihen, und die Markierungen auf Grundsteinen, deren neutrale und gleichmäßige Stil dem Lauf der Zeit trotzt. Es sind die nüchternen Leuchtreklamen, die Spirituosenläden und Apotheken schmücken, und die Namen der Eigentümer, die deutlich auf Lieferwagen gemalt sind. Diese Buchstaben sind einfach und nicht verhandelbar, haben aber dennoch eine große Persönlichkeit und sind oft sehr gut gemacht. Und obwohl Designer mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert lang mit ihnen gelebt hat, blieben sie bemerkenswerterweise bis zum Jahr 2000, als wir Gotham einführten, unbelebt.

Gotham ist ein seltenes Design, eine neue Schrift, die sich irgendwie vertraut anfühlt. Von der Schrift, die sie inspiriert hat, hat Gotham einen ehrlichen Ton geerbt, der durchsetzungsfähig, aber nie aufdringlich, freundlich, aber nie volkstümlich, selbstbewusst, aber nie unnahbar ist. Die Einbeziehung so vieler origineller Bestandteile ohne historischen Präzedenzfall - Kleinbuchstaben, Kursivbuchstaben, eine umfassende Palette von Strichstärken und -breiten und ein Zeichensatz, der über das lateinische Alphabet hinausgeht - verstärkt die Schlichtheit dieser Formen mit einer willkommenen Raffinesse und bringt eine breite Palette von ausdrucksstarken Stimmen in die Gotham-Familie.

Designer fragte, ob Gotham neue typografische Aufgaben übernehmen könnte, und wir haben zugehört. Gotham Condensed bietet neun Schnitte von Thin bis Ultra, einschließlich einer Reihe von Merkmalen, die für Condensed-Schriften ungewöhnlich sind Fonts, angefangen bei der passenden Kursivschrift in jedem Schnitt.
