About the family

ITC Charter was drawn by Matthew Carter in 1987 and was designed to work well with early low-resolution imaging devices – but this was a secondary design criterion to being a versatile and handsome typestyle.

ITC Charter follows traditional 16th-century Roman types in proportion and form, but adds to this some very original traits of its own. Its relatively narrow capitals and angled weight stress to the lowercase bowls are conventional in form to late old style typeface designs developed in France. But ITC Charter is no simple revival of 16th-century French fonts. It contains dramatic deviations from the early design’s norm. ITC Charter’s serifs are square and chunky, rather than the delicate designs normally attributable to the early French typefaces. And the lowercase italic’s proportions are almost as wide as the roman. The contrast in stroke weight is also much less severe.

In addition, ITC Charter incorporates design features to make it an ideal choice for current needs: narrow proportions, which allow for economical copyfit; a generous x-height, which improves readability at small point sizes; and sturdy, open letterforms to ensure reliable reproduction in all imaging environments, be they PDFs, digital screens, or hardcopy.
