À propos de Gotham Police Family

Tous les concepteurs ont admiré le lettrage simple du langage vernaculaire américain, ces lettres de peinture, de plâtre, de néon, de verre et d'acier qui occupent une place prépondérante dans le paysage urbain. C'est de ces humbles débuts qu'est né le Gotham, une police de caractères résistante pour l'éternité.

Le caractère Gotham a été conçu par Jonathan Hoefler et Tobias Frere-Jones en 2000. Sans empattement et partageant de nombreux attributs du genre "géométrique" de la typographie, Gotham s'inspire d'un style de lettres capitales audacieuses qui s'est développé en dehors de la tradition typographique au début du XXe siècle et qui est commun aux affiches lithographiées, aux enseignes émaillées et aux façades commerciales de la ville de New York. Apparu pour la première fois dans les pages du magazine GQ en 2001, Gotham a attiré l'attention internationale en 2007 lorsqu'il a été adopté par la campagne présidentielle de Barack Obama. Gotham est l'une des polices de caractères les plus populaires et les plus influentes de notre époque. Elle fait partie de la collection permanente du Musée d'art moderne de New York.

Depuis le bureau du concepteur :

Gotham célèbre les lettres attrayantes et discrètes de la ville. New York regorge de lettres de ce type, des lettres sans empattement faites à la main qui partagent une structure sous-jacente commune, une idée d'ingénieur du "lettrage de base" qui transcende à la fois les caractéristiques de leurs matériaux et les manières de leurs auteurs. Ce sont les chiffres en bronze coulé qui donnent leur autorité aux portes des bureaux, et les marques sur les pierres angulaires dont le style neutre et stable défie le passage du temps. Ce sont les enseignes au néon qui ornent les magasins d'alcool et les pharmacies, et les noms des propriétaires peints sur les camions de livraison. Ces lettres sont simples et non négociables, mais elles ont une grande personnalité et sont souvent fabriquées par des experts. Bien que les designers aient vécu avec elles pendant plus d'un demi-siècle, elles n'ont pas été remises au goût du jour jusqu'en 2000, date à laquelle nous avons lancé Gotham.

Gotham est le plus rare des designs, la nouvelle police de caractères qui semble familière. Du lettrage qui l'a inspiré, le Gotham a hérité d'un ton honnête, affirmé mais jamais imposant, amical mais jamais folklorique, confiant mais jamais distant. L'inclusion de tant d'ingrédients originaux sans précédent historique - une minuscule, un italique, une gamme complète de graisses et de largeurs, et un jeu de caractères qui transcende l'alphabet latin - rehausse la simplicité de ces formes avec une sophistication bienvenue, et apporte un large éventail de voix expressives à la famille Gotham.

Quatre largeurs

Les graphistes nous ont demandé si le Gotham pouvait assumer de nouveaux rôles typographiques, et nous les avons écoutés. Gotham Narrow réimagine Gotham comme une police de texte peu encombrante, réussissant à s'adapter aux limites de la colonne de texte étroite sans avoir l'air trop serré. Avec la silhouette d'une série de titres classiques, Gotham Extra Narrow est un choix pratique pour les tailles grandes et petites, avec un jeu de caractères ample qui le recommande pour les environnements à forte densité d'information. Gotham Condensed propose neuf graisses, de Thin à Ultra, ainsi qu'un certain nombre de caractéristiques inhabituelles en condensé polices, à commencer par des italiques assorties dans chaque graisse.
